The Zips (3-5-2) traveled to two different states this weekend to take on the Western Michigan Broncos and Northern Illinois Huskies and ended up losing to the Broncos and defeating the Huskies.

On Friday the Zips traveled up to Kalamazoo, Michigan to take on the Western Michigan Broncos (5-5-1). The team ended up losing 2-0 to their divisional rival, who is currently ranked seventh in the MAC conference.

The Zips Rachel Phillip and Ashley Hughes led the team with three shots. Britini Back, Katelyn Hausfeld and Kyra Petrole had two shots each.

The Zips recorded 16 shots while the Broncos recorded 15.

We are getting our chances, that is not the problem. The problem is we are not finishing them, I would be more worried if we were not getting good looks at the goal, Zips Head Coach Chris Pfau said.

Against Western Michigan we had a clear break away to tie the game going into half and missed it

Goaltender Jeny Wolbert played the entire game letting two goals go by, but had five saves for the game.

Scoring for the Broncos were Kelsey Carmichael and Nikolette Rivera. Anina Cicerone led the Broncos with three shots while Emily Peterson and Nicole Dulyea recorded one assist each.

Playing all 90 minutes for the Broncos was goaltender Sarah Phillips, who had seven saves in the game.

On Sunday the team traveled south from Michigan to DeKalb, Illinois to take on the Northern Illinois Huskies, who are currently ranked 10th in the conference (4-6-2).

It only took one goal to defeat the Huskies, which was scored by freshman Katie Wise (first goal of her career). Jordan Baranowski was recorded with the assist on the play.

Kristen Gregg led the team with two shots while Jordan Clark, Kyra Petrole and Katie Wise had one shot a piece.

Goaltending for the Zips was Jeny Wolbert, who played the whole game and recorded nine saves.

Leading the Huskies with four shots was Lisa Maier. Goaltender Lindsey Curnock played all ninety minutes for the Huskies and recorded three saves.

The Zips defeated the Huskies 1-0.

We just talked about competing and working hard, that if we can do that for 90 minutes we are good enough to get results. It was great to see them to do that in a big game for us, Pfau said.

The team has struggled in the box all season, but this weekend they improved by playing more physical.

I thought we improved in the box, for most part. I thought the first goal against Western Michigan, our defender got caught ball watching, Pfau said.

The team lost their first game of the weekend and won the second game, but there were postives coming out of the weekend.

We are playing together as a team and we are working hard for each other and battling Pfau said.

The Zips have struggled defensively, especially this weekend.

The biggest area we’ll have to work on is off re-starts, Pfau said. We gave up three goals over the last four games on re-starts, either from throw in or free kicks.

This weekend the Zips will stay in Ohio and will take on the Toledo Rockets (6-4-2) and the Bowling Green State Falcons (4-8-1).
