Event raises sexual abuse awareness

“Take Back the Night, a national organization which raises awareness for sexual violence, will be holding an event Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 from 6 until 9:00 p.m. at the Firestone Park Community Center sponsored by the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties.”

Take Back the Night, a national organization which raises awareness for sexual violence, will be holding an event Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 from 6 until 9:00 p.m. at the Firestone Park Community Center sponsored by the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties. Since the late 1970s, Take Back the Night events have been held by college and university women’s centers, rape crisis centers, battered women’s shelters and other organizations dedicated to aiding women in gaining security and empowerment.

While some events involve only women, most events, like the one being held this Friday (which encourages that both men and women attend to show their support) are becoming coed as more and more men come forth with stories of sexual abuse.

All of the events are aimed to bring attention to and protest the problem of sexual violence including rape, sexual assault, dating violence, sexual abuse, domestic violence, stalking, sexual harassment, child abuse, child prostitution and other world wide sexually related crimes, and support those who have been victimized to take a visible stand toward ending sexual violence.

The more people that attend this event, the more awareness will be raised for those suffering everyday from sexually related crimes, both around the community and the world so come out tomorrow to show your care and compassion in recognizing this global issue.

Firestone Park Community Center is located at 1480 Girard St., Akron, OH 44301. If you have any questions, feel free to call 330-374-0740, ext. 122 to reach the outreach/volunteer coordinator of this event. Childcare will be available.
