Zips small forward Kara Murphy led the Zips with 27 points, while adding six rebounds.

Baumgartner added 16 points and five rebounds.

The Zips trailed 33-28 at halftime, courtesy of Mastodons guards Courtney Reed and Jordan Zuppe, who combined to score 14 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Entering the second half, the Zips picked up their defensive intensity, limiting the duo to 3-for-8 shooting the rest of the contest, though Zuppe ended up with 14 points.

The difference between the first and second half was definitely defensive intensity, Kest said.

Akron’s offensive efficiency also picked up in the second half, making 13-of-30 shots after being held to 35.7 percent shooting in the first stanza.

Power forward Jolene Tamboue led the defensive attack for the Zips with seven rebounds. Tamboue also recorded four points, two assists, and one block in the game.

Coming off the bench to give the Zips more of an offensive attack with 10 points was freshman power forward Rachel Tecca. Tecca also recorded one assist and one rebound in the game.

The Mastodons kept the game close with leading scoring forward Eva Ivanova leading the offensive attack with 15 points.

I felt bad for IPFW because they played their hearts out, Kest said.

The Zips will return to James A. Rhodes arena on Dec. 5 to take on the Youngstown State Penguins at 2 p.m.
