With the recent earthquakes in Haiti, hundreds of people have been flocking to the small Caribbean nation to provide help. Students and faculty from UA may soon be involved in the effort to provide relief.

Students who would like to get involved will meet on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Union Market Dining Commons in the Student Union.

Students should come with ideas of what the university community can do to help.

Liz Black, a freshman education major, said, I think relief efforts are needed. The situation is supposed to be pretty bad. I’m thinking about maybe getting involved.

Other students had a similar approach to providing relief after the devastation of the Haitian earthquake. I think it is really good that the university is raising awareness and getting involved. I probably won’t be getting involved, but I donated money to the cause, said Shelly Matushevski, a junior statistics major.

Opinions on campus of Haiti relief vary however. Chris Tataris, a freshman computer engineering student, had this to say about Haiti: I don’t really care. I understand medical help, but we don’t need to be sending the army. Another student, junior John Engelhart, had a similar opinion.

I think it is a great thing that people are helping and are willing to volunteer, but I feel like people should also be more interested in things that are happening here, Engelhart said.

Colleges and universities around the country have been putting together relief efforts. Since Jan. 14, Purdue University student groups have been raising funds for Haiti. The University of Notre Dame planned to donate the gate receipts and the net concession revenue from its men’s and women’s basketball games last weekend to benefit Haiti relief efforts.
