The Zips played the Central Michigan Chippewas Feb. 4 and finished with a 62-55 win.

Three players scored in double digits for the Zips against the Chippewas.

Small forward Kara Murphy led the attack with 17 points.

Center Kyle Baumgartner put in 11 points and small forward Jasmine Mushington put in another 10 points for the Zips.

Power forward Jolene Tamboue recorded another double-double as she recorded 10 rebounds and 11 points against the Chippewas.

I can’t say enough about Jolene Tamboue and her sense of urgency with another double-double, Kest said.

Point guard Ayla Guzzardo helped lead the Zips to victory by recording five assists.

The Zips scored 28 of their 62 points in the paint and went 25-54 (46 percent) from the court, recording 36 rebounds, 19 assists, seven blocks and three steals against the Chippewa’s.

The Chippewas (8-14) are third in the MAC, trailing behind Toledo Rockets (18-5) and the Eastern Michigan Eagles (17-5).

Shonda Long led the Chippewas in scoring with 17 points.

Britini Houghton led the defensive attack for the Chippewas with eight rebounds.

The Chippewas went 18-60 (30 percent) from the court, recording 39 rebounds, five assists and seven steals.

Even with the rest of campus closed due to weather conditions this past Saturday, the Zips still played their game against the Northern Illinois Huskies (8-13) to keep the winning streak alive with a 57-39 final.

We knew this season, that if we played hard and played well defensively, we had a shot to win every game, Kest said.

The Zips once again had three players score into double digits against the Huskies.

Murphy led the way with 17 points.

Baumgartner had 12 points, while shooting guard Amber Witt put in another 11 points for the Zips.

Baumgartner also led the defensive attack for the Zips with nine rebounds.

Leading the attack from the point guard position was Guzzardo with five assists and seven points.

The Zips scored 22 of their 57 points in the paint and were 19-52 (36.5 percent) from the court with 14 assists in the game.

Defensively, the Zips recorded 38 rebounds, three blocks and seven steals.

Marke Freeman led the offensive attack for the Huskies, scoring 17 points.

Defensively for the Huskies, both Sarah Rogers and Mauvolyene Adams recorded six rebounds apiece.

With Kent State losing Feb. 6 to Eastern Michigan 78-72, the Zips are now in second place in the MAC eastern division. The Zips now only trail to the Bowling Green State University Falcons (19-5).

The Zips will hit the road this week taking on the Toledo Rockets (18-5) Feb. 10 7 p.m.

On Feb. 13, the Zips will go to New York and take on the Buffalo Bulls (7-16).

The Zips will play at home Feb. 20 against the Bowling Green State University Falcons.
