The pitching for Akron also appeared to be under par as the Zips gave up an eight run inning in the sixth.

I was very disappointed in our defense, and our pitching needs to get a lot better, said Zips head coach Julie Jones.

Sophomore pitcher Andrea Arney pitched five and a third of an inning, giving up five earned runs and ten hits putting her record to 6-9.

Junior Alex Reideman came in for relief pitching an inning and a half, giving up four hits, and no runs.

Offensively, the Zips were lead by senior Krista Hansen who had a home run and single with two RBI.

Freshmen Alissa Birkhimer also had a home run and a single with two RBI, but it was not enough as Youngstown State scored eleven runs in the game with fourteen hits.

We hit the ball well all day, Jones said. When you score seven runs, though, you should win a game

The Zips capitalized on their offense during the second game by winning 6-0.

Akron scored two runs in the first and four in the second, shutting out Youngstown State.

Junior Heather Bauer pitched a complete game and improved her record to 5-3. Bauer also gave up a total of five hits and no runs, while striking out three.

I thought she did pretty well, Jones said. She’s been struggling a little bit so she needed that win.

The Zips were led offensively by sophomore Crystal Hernandez, who went 2-for-3 with a double.

Senior Krista Hansen was a force once again batting 2-for-4 with a stolen base, while Birkhimer had two RBI and a double.

The Zips are currently in second place in the MAC east division trailing only the Kent State Golden Flashes, who are 16-15.

The Akron softball team returns to action at Lee Jackson Field on April 10 at 1 p.m. against Northern Illinois in a double header.
