The Ohio House of Representatives takes the dangers of texting while driving seriously even if drivers don’t.
The House passed a bill on March 25 that banned texting while driving; the Senate needs to approve the bill for it to become law.
University of Akron students know the dangers of driving while texting, but many still take the risk.
Approximately 6,000 people died in crashes involving a distracted driver and more than half a million were injured, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Livvy Duckworth, a sophomore nursing major, said texting is dangerous because it takes one’s focus away from the road, and driving requires focus regardless of a person’s age or experience.
There should be laws against texting and driving because it impairs your ability to drive. You could easily compare drinking and driving to texting and driving, and there are laws against driving under the influence, Duckworth said.
The U.S. Department of Transportation Web site reports that using a cell phone while driving delays a driver’s reaction time, justlike alcohol.
Alex Lanshe, a junior majoring in sports therapy said he was texted while driving, but tries to avoid it as much as possible. He said people should refrain from it as much as possible.
I do it because sometimes I feel pressed for time and I feel obligated to answer the question now. I’m sure it’s the same with other people. Anyone who tells you that they have never texted while driving is lying.
Duckworth said, I will admit that I text and drive, but I don’t think I’ve had any terrible experiences. Maybe a few narrowly missed mailboxes, but that’s about it. I know it’s dangerous, but sometimes there are things that need immediate attention.
Duckworth and Lanshe said when driving a car they try to text only when stopped at a red light.
Nick Fragiskatos, a sophomore computer engineering major, said texting while driving is dangerous; he tries to keep it to a minimum and has never had a bad experience while driving.
Melissa Fetzer, a sophomore education major, does not text while driving. You can’t read and write the texts and pay attention to the road at the same time. Well, some people can, but I can’t, she said.
Fetzer, Duckworth, Lanshe and Fragiskatos said they have friends who text while driving. When Duckworth is in the car with friends who text, she will offer to text for them.
According to the Federal Communications Commission, mobile communications are linked to a significant increase in distracted driving, which results in injury or death.
