Economics, enrichment free pizza

Those with a passion for economics can join likeminded students in the University of Akron’s Economics Club.

The club provides networking opportunities among its members to further realize both their academic and career goals.

We’ve held a panel on how to get an internship in economics, visited an economics conference and had numerous speakers from various industries, club President Jordan Theaker said.

Adele Roth, an alumna of the UA Economics department, spoke to the club Wednesday regarding her job at the city of Akron’s Office of Economic Development. She talked about a variety of things, including what an economics degree has meant for her.

The Economics Club is mainly made up of students who are majoring or minoring in economics, however Theaker explained there are also members who are pursuing degrees in other areas of the College of Business.

Although this year the club has seen a small increase in membership, surprisingly Theaker, who is majoring in labor economics with a minor in mathematics and statistics, does not attribute this to the United States’ worsening economy.

If people are interested in learning more about the economy, I’d be more inclined to advise them to enroll in an Intro to Economics course in addition to attending a meeting of the Economics Club, Theaker said.

Theaker joined the club two years ago to get more involved with student organizations and get acquainted with others in his field.

He recommends interested students attend a meeting to see if the Economics Club is a good fit for them.

We don’t bite, Theaker said. There’s always free pizza and sometimes general nonsense in addition to actual serious discussion.

The club meets throughout the academic year, every other Wednesday at noon in room 436 in the Economic Department of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Students can officially join the club by signing up at a meeting or e-mailing Theaker at [email protected].
