The NFL draft begins today and with the first pick the St. Louis Rams will likely draft Sam Bradford. That would be a great move, but Jimmy Clausen is the better quarterback.
The St. Louis Rams just released long time starting quarterback Marc Bulger last week. Rams fans have missed the Greatest Show on Turf for too long now and want to return to the dominance they once had with retired quarterback Kurt Warner.
Bradford is the logical choice for the Rams. He was the Heisman trophy winner two years ago at the University of Oklahoma. The Sooners quarterback will help sell more tickets and is more of a fan favorite than Clausen will be.
The question remains, why will Bradford be the 1st pick overall this coming Thursday? Bradford is one of the most accurate quarterbacks to enter the draft since Eli Manning. A lot of scouts are comparing him to Manning too.
He is a smart, hardworking athlete who will be the first to practice and the last to leave, which is what teams are looking for out of their leader on the offensive side of the ball.
Bradford is also a taller quarterback standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 220 lbs., which will make it easy for him at the next level to see over his offensive line.
Notre Dame’s Clausen is the better choice for the Rams. Clausen came into South Bend with a lot of hype. He did not live up to it in wins and losses, but did live up to it in stats.
Clausen’s release is one of the best in the game as he learned from one of the best offensive minds in Charlie Weis (fired from the Notre Dame head coaching job this season).
He has one of the best stances for a quarterback as you will ever see.
Clausen is better than Bradford in a few areas of the game. Clausen played in a pro style offense at Notre Dame, while Bradford played in a spread offense at Oklahoma. It has been shown throughout the years quarterbacks coming from a spread offense have struggled to translate to a pro style offense in the NFL.
Clausen is better in all facets of the game when it comes to throwing the football. He is more accurate on the deep ball and throws with touch.
The one knock on Clausen is his maturity and his arrogance. He crosses the line between confident and arrogant and demands the best of his teammates. Clausen will struggle to see over the offensive line at the next level.
Both quarterbacks have the same knock. They have had durability concerns. Both have had injury concerns as Bradford is coming off shoulder surgery while Clausen is coming off a toe injury. Both quarterbacks have a skinny stature; durability will always be a concern.
Clausen is better than Bradford because Clausen’s offensive line at Notre Dame was less effective. Bradford was only successful when Oklahoma line was at its best. Clausen never had a good offensive line at Notre Dame.
The main difference in the two offensive lines is that when Bradford was pressured he threw a lot of interceptions and got injured, while Clausen got rid of the ball quickly and moved the ball down field.
If the Rams want to get back to their winning ways Clausen is the way to go.
