Softball splits double dip with St. Francis

“The University of Akron’s softball team split two games with St. Francis losing the first 1-0, while winning the second 10-6 in extra innings on Tuesday. The Zips were held to three hits in the first game loss. Akron (15-25) put base runners in scoring position in both the third, fourth and sixth innings but were unable to capitalize.”

The University of Akron’s softball team split two games with St. Francis losing the first 1-0, while winning the second 10-6 in extra innings on Tuesday.

St. Francis (11-34) scored their only run in the fourth inning off of a sacrifice fly to center field in game two.

Getting the start on the mound for the Zips was junior Alex Reidemen.

Reidemen pitched a complete game, giving up one earned run, eight hits and struck out two.

Offensively the Zips were led by juniors Olivia Hegedus, Heather Bauer and Monica Shorter with one hit each.

The Zips second game ended in their in extra innings.

Akron would score first off of a throwing error in the third inning, when sophomore Alex Helfrich stole third.

The Zips added one more run in the third, when Heather Bauer hit a homerun over the center field fence.

St. Francis tied the game with three doubles in the fourth inning.

Akron answered back in the fifth inning with two more runs, when junior Alex Feltes was able to bunt in Heather Bauer from third.

Monica Shorter then drove in Feltes, with a double to centerfield.

In the seventh inning St. Francis tied the game up again, with a fielder’s choice and wild pitch, forcing extra innings.

Akron would then go on an offensive surge in the eighth inning, scoring six runs on five hits.

Offensively, Akron was led by junior Sarah Early who batted 3-for-4 with one run scored.

Heather Bauer also led the offensive attack, batting 2-for-4 with a home run, and three runs scored.

Heather Baur pitched six innings for the Zips. She struck out five and gave up four earned runs.

The Zips return to the diamond this weekend, April 23 to 25, at Lee Jackson Field facing Buffalo in a double header on April 23 followed by rival Kent State on April 24 and 25.

The April 24 game will also be a special one as the University of Akron celebrates the accomplishments of the 1984 and 1985 National Runner Up teams.
