Plan exams better, don't wait until the final moment

The end of spring semester is the single-most dreaded time of spring and everyone is struggling to keep up.

Being a college student at the end of a semester means scrambling to complete last-minute assignments, spending endless hours in the library studying for final exams and trying to cope with what feels like the highest possible stress level known to humankind.

Depending on the class load and of course instructors, the end of the semester can range from being incredibly difficult and being relatively manageable. More often than not, though, this time of year is nerve-racking and busy for all students, undergraduate or graduate, and instructors are not always the greatest advocates for stress-management.

If instructors and the administration in general would get on board, finals and end-of-semester assignments could be a more smooth transition into the next semester, or graduation for most students.

Some instructors do not announce a due date or study requirements for final exams until the last possible minute, which is not conducive to productive planning and preparation.

Personally, I have one class I have still not received a final exam time and date for yet and exams are supposed to be next week. Other instructors load students up on last minute assignments that are unrelated to a final exam or paper, making it difficult to give adequate attention to studying.

In addition, many students work part-time and have a hard time keeping work schedules in check when they are bombarded with jammed miscellaneous pending assignments.

Final exams almost always determine whether or not a student will receive credit for the course. Most of the time, if a student fails the final exam, the student fails the entire course. So this is an incredibly vital time of year which both students and faculty should pay careful attention to and give a sufficient amount of time.

All instructors of the University of Akron should be required to assign a final exam date within the first few weeks of the semester’s beginning, as well as the material which will appear on the final a month before the end of the semester. This will give students the opportunity to prepare an end-of-semester schedule ahead of time and decrease the amount of stress that they are already experiencing due to the amount of work this time of year incurs.
