SAMS Rock Alike: Laughter causing good

By: Samantha Hubble

SAMS Rock Alike, an annual lip-sync contest, will rock the Student Union Ballroom tonight at 8 pm.

SAMS (Students Against Multiple Sclerosis) is an organization that donates to MS research, and for the admission cost of one dollar, students can take in a show and donate to this cause.

“I’m nervous, yet excited to perform for a good cause,” said freshman Spicer Hall Government Secretary Emily Hartman.

Dozens of organizations will compete in the contest for a year’s worth of bragging rights while raising money for MS research in the lip-syncing extravaganza, where groups of students can join together in song and dance queued to a mash-up of songs of their choice for a chance to win the year’s biggest competitive event.

“I feel that showing our support through Akron and raising money will show how compassionate we are as a university,” said UA freshman Josh Cox, who plans to participate in the event this year.

Every year the event raises thousands of dollars toward MS research. All participants must submit $50 with their application to perform. They then each compete to see who can raise the most money before performance night.

“I’m really excited about [SAMS]; the program is fun and creative and it raises money for a really good cause,” said freshman Laura Sanicky.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that affects how the brain communicates with the body. It usually strikes in young adulthood and affects women more often than men.

To participate, students can contribute a dollar to attend SAMS Rock Alike tonight at 8 pm in the Student Union Ballroom for entertainment and the chance to contribute to finding a cure for a debilitating disease.
