Women's basketball will host Western Michigan on Saturday

By: Parker Perry

The University of Akron women’s basketball team will host Western Michigan University Saturday evening at 5 p.m. at the James A. Rhodes Arena, while also raising funds for breast cancer research.

The Broncos enter Akron toward the bottom of the MAC standings, and have lost seven of their last eight games.

Western does, however, have two players averaging double digits each game in scoring this season. Seniors Maria Iaquaniello and Miame Giden have led their team in most offensive statistical categories. Iaquaniello has scored a little above 13 points per game this season, while Giden comes in second with just over 11.

Akron enters the contest after beating Central Michigan last Saturday. After having leading scorer Sina King return from injury, Akron was able to handle the pressure from CMU and return to the win column after losing three straight of their own.

Opponents of WMU are shooting an average of .344 from beyond the arc this season, which bodes well for Akron. J

Junior Taylor Ruper, sophomore Hanna Luburgh and sophomore Carly Young are so far shooting above .300 from behind the line. Knocking down long shots could play a role for the Akron Zips Saturday.

Akron will be taking the opportunity to raise funds by participating in the “Play for Kay” Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Kay Yow was the head basketball coach at North Carolina State for 34 years before losing her battle to breast cancer. The NCAA has honored her courage, career and life by encouraging schools to participate in the fundraising event.

Fans will be able to purchase specialty items to support the cause at Saturday’s game.

Akron has four more home games (including the Western Michigan game) scheduled in the regular season. They also have only six games remaining overall.
