UA Tennis prevails, reaches 10-0

By: Christian Turner

The University of Akron tennis team remains undefeated after a successful weekend of play.

Every time we play Louisville, it is an absolute battle,” said Akron Head Coach Brandon Padgett.  “I was pleased with our doubles play, and that ended up being the difference in the match.”

Zara Harutyunyan and partner Prang Pantusart defeated Amelia Harris and Manuela Valasquez at No. 1 with a score of 8-5. Juniors Angelika and Angelina Jogasuria suffered a tough loss against Rebecca Shine and Julia Fellerhoff at No. 2, with a score of 9-8 (5). At No. 3, Olga Shkundina and Natalia Kuvakina came back to defeat Sarah Miller and Stefanie Villajuan, 8-5.

In singles, Harutyunyan defeated Fellerhof 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. At No. 2, Pantusart fell short to Louisville’s Shine 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. At No. 3, freshman Shkundina went three sets defeating Velasquez 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 4, Angelina Jogasuria defeated Mandy Brown 6-2, 7-5, while at No. 5, Angelika Jogasuria fell short to Louisville’s Gabrille Brown 6-2, 7-5. At No. 6, Sophomore Berestetska was defeated 6-2, 6-3.

This is the third straight season the Zips have beat the Cardinals 4-3.

After a marathon match with the Cardinals, the team took on the Bearcats, who were no match.

“We came out very flat in doubles, but picked up our energy level right away in singles,” Padgett said.

The Zips swept UC at every point.

This match marked the team’s sixth shutout for the 2012 season.

Even while boasting a 10-0 record, Padgett is convinced the team has more in them.

“We still aren’t playing at the level that we need to be at, but we are certainly getting closer,” he said.

The next match is against Kentucky, who has only suffered one loss this season. The match will take place Tuesday at LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow, Ohio.
