It was a Monday morning when I was called and asked if I could go cover Akron in Seattle for the March Madness tournament. I instantly texted my parents to see if I could go, and within the span of 30 minutes, I went from going to work on Friday to covering March Madness in Seattle. On Saturday, March 15, The University of Akron Zips Men’s Basketball Team beat the Miami Redhawks in the MAC championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament: March Madness. This season will be a memorable one for the team and campus alike. It is only the 6th time in program history that Akron has won the MAC regular season, finishing with the best record in the Mid-American Conference. Recently, Akron’s men’s and women’s basketball teams each took on the Kent State Golden Flashes, one winning and the other facing defeat. The men’s team won their match up 85-71 facing the Flashes, while the women fell 73-51. Wins and losses against Kent State always hit different for the Zips. That’s because they are UA’s biggest rival. So, how did these two schools with similar colors become sworn enemies?
