Baseball beats Malone, Youngstown State

Akron sweeps in their mid-week matchups against Malone and Youngstown.

The University of Akron baseball team defeated the visiting Malone Pioneers by a score of 9-7.

The Zips (20-22) started the game with three runs in the first inning. Malone (26-18) answered with one run in the second and two in the fourth tying the game at 3. Both teams were at 7 at the end of the seventh inning; Matt LaRocca knocked a two-run single, breaking the tie and adding two more runs to the score at the bottom of the eighth which would lead to the two winning runs.

Game leaders include Anthony Bova and Joey Havrilak who both collected three runs in the game. Billy Salem and LaRocca had three RBIs with Brian Lees had two during the game. As a team, Akron batted well at .353 with Lees having a .667 batting night.

Wednesday, April 29, the Zips went on the road to play Youngstown State. The Zips finished the game winning by a score of 4-2.

During the game, UA and YSU scored twice on their first at bat, knotting the score up at two apiece. This score stood unchanged until the top of the fifth where Lees and Salem scored. As a team, the Zips had a batting average of .342. Rohan was the most productive at bat for the Zips as he hit 4/4, while Lees performed well again converting 3/4 of his at bats.

Josh Lapinana recorded the victory as he pitched six innings and four strikeouts while also giving up two runs and one error in the 26 batters he faced.

Zips will travel to Bowling Green (17-22) to take on the Falcons for a three game series in what they hope will bring the team back to the top of the MAC standings.
