Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams came through and earned victories over the weekend, and the Browns and Steelers won this week as well.
The Browns began a two-game winning streak, and the Steelers got back to winning after falling to the Browns.
Men’s basketball
A clutch overtime victory over Middle Tennessee puts another win into the Zips’ record. It’s great for our basketball team and our school to get wins, specially after a disappointing football season.
I’m also pleased to see so many basketball posters scattered around campus, promoting the games — especially the big poster on the side of Schrank Hall. This is a great way to get students into the games. I hope our basketball team continues this success.
There is still a lot of season left to be played, as we’re only in December. I’m happy to see them rebound after a shaky start. They’re finally getting back on the winning side.
Women’s basketball
A hard-earned victory against Canisius gave the women’s basketball team their sixth victory of the season on Saturday.
It was so entertaining to watch Akron fight back after being down. It was great to see the crowd getting into it, the students dancing, and everyone having a good time.
Some amazing shots and layups were key in getting this victory. Our women’s team really did show a lot of teamwork and passed the ball around a ton. That’s what it takes to win: teamwork.
Hopefully they can continue their winning ways and earn their seventh victory. It has been such a tremendous start for them. I hope they keep up the great work.
Professional football
The Browns improve their record to 4-8 with a victory over the Oakland Raiders. The Browns are also on a two-game winning streak for the first time this season. I think the victory over the Steelers was a big motivator for them. Like I’ve said, though, the Browns have a lot of work to do if they plan on making it to the post-season. They will probably have to win out in order to even have a chance. Not many NFL teams make it to the post-season with an 8-8 record. They face the Kansas City Chiefs next weekend.
On the other side, the Steelers, after falling to the Browns last weekend, earned a much-needed victory against the Baltimore Ravens, who would have won the AFC North Division with a victory. The Steelers improve to 7-5 and hold the sixth seed (the final seed that qualifies for the playoffs). But the Cincinnati Bengals are right behind the Steelers and have the same record.
It’s going to be an interesting end to the season.
With basketball being the only sport currently going on at Akron, it’s great to have two teams with winning records. I’m confident that both teams will keep on winning, and that they’ll both have successful seasons.
Go Zips!
