On Saturday, The University of Akron men’s soccer team got back to their 2010 National Championship form as they picked up two 1-0 victories against Michigan and Oakland at the Michigan Bucks College Cup at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas.
Midfielder Scott Caldwell assisted both goals for the Zips as they improve to 3-1 in the spring season.
The first game against Michigan featured a re-match of the 2010 College Cup semifinal, with UA scoring in the 54th on a restart goal. Caldwell sent a low shot free kick across the box, in which defender Chad Barson shot to the far-post for the score.
In the second game, The Zips faced the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, whom they defeated 5-0 earlier in the 2010 season.
UA scored once again on a restart goal, which proved to be the lone goal of the game. Caldwell again came up with the assist, sending a free kick into the box where transfer Kayvon Afsarifard headed it in for a score during the 50th minute.
Both midfielders Martin Ontiveros and Reinaldo Brenes were unable to participate in this past Saturday’s games due to injuries.
The Zips will return to spring action this coming Saturday when they take on Maryland at 2 p.m. at Lee R. Jackson Soccer Field.
