Learning a new language doesn’t always have to be expensive and time-consuming.

Graduate Assistant Chao Mu is teaching free beginning-level Chinese classes for UA students and faculty.

Originally started in the spring semester, Mu wanted to continue the free lessons for the fall.

This semester, the classes are held in Bierce Library. Mu likes that he has access to a bigger classroom.

“It gives me a chance to practice my Chinese and presentation skills,” Mu said.

These classes are general lessons that do not include tests or exams. Each class changes topic, but they’re not continuous.

“No matter what class you start, you can always understand what we’re talking about. Every class starts over from the beginning,” Mu said.

At the beginning of each class, Mu also has a brief review of what was previously learned.

Mu enjoys teaching his free classes because it makes him feel connected to his native country.

“It makes me so proud as a Chinese student here to teach my native language to people who are interested in a new language,” Mu said.

Classes are held every Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Bierce Library, Room 154.

Students also have another opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture. “Chinese Corner” allows participants to discuss the culture with a Chinese native.

It will be held on Fridays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Union Room 321.
