The University of Akron will host its 9th annual Black Male Summit this Friday and Saturday, focusing on how media affects black male identity.

The two-day event features more than 60 panel discussions, breakout sessions, and workshops. Russ Mitchell, managing editor at WKYC-TV, will moderate.

Doors open Friday, April 6 at 8 a.m. at the John S. Knight Center. The day includes a live broadcast of the “Tom Joyner Morning Show,” a luncheon, and several keynote speakers such as former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial.

In addition, UA and the Black Male Summit Planning Committee will honor three recipients with the annual Black Male Summit Legacy Award. The award is given to honor the achievements of prominent African-American males.

This year’s inductees include civil rights attorney Ed Gilbert, Bishop Joey Johnson, and community activist Kwame Scruggs.

Saturday’s event will be held in the UA Student Union Ballroom from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. ESPN sports commentator Stephen Smith and News One Now host Roland Martin are scheduled to speak.

Last year’s event attracted more than 1,600 attendees.
