Women’s soccer to face road test
The Akron women’s soccer team (5-8-3, 2-5-1 MAC) will travel to Michigan over the weekend to continue their Mid-American Conference tour.
The Zips are coming off their second MAC win after beating Bowling Green 2-1 last Sunday. The Zips are currently in fourth place in the Mid-American Conference East Division.
Western Michigan, who play in the West Division, are in third place in their division. They have won five games in the conference and are considered one of the teams that could win the Mid-American Conference championship.
Western Michigan does a good job at controlling the pace of the game. So far this season they have taken 185 shots on goal and have only allowed their opponents 113. They also beat their opponents in goals scored. The Broncos have scored over two goals per game while only giving up one.
Western Michigan have averaged 16.8 shots while only giving their opponents around 10 per game. They score about 12 percent of the time.
Eastern Michigan are also favored to win the MAC. They are currently in first place in the conference after clinching six wins so far this season in conference play.
Eastern Michigan play a similar style to Western Michigan. They have played 16 games so far this season and have also averaged just over two goals per game. However, they have had more trouble limiting their opponents. Eastern has only out shot their opponents by 16. They too have allowed just over one goal per game.
The Zips average less than 10 percent on their shots. They have taken 196 shots so far this year but only average over one goal per game.
The Zips have not been a top team in the conference, but can change that if they can capture a couple results over the weekend. The Zips can help their chances at making the conference tournament even if they only tie. As of now they must jump two teams to clinch a spot that eluded them last season.
