Men’s golf
The University of Akron men’s golf team placed 14th overall at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate event this week. The event was hosted by South Carolina Aiken and was played on the par-70, 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Course.
South Carolina defended their team title for last year’s event by posting a score of 839 (-19). Akron finished with a 54-hole total of 885 (+45).
Individually for Akron, George Baylis led the Zips, finishing 32nd overall with a score of 219 (+9). Elliot Grayson competed the event in 41st spot, carding a 221 (+11). Grayson also had the low round for Akron when he shot an even par 70 during the first round.
After some time off, Akron will return to action on March 25 when they travel to Greenville, South Carolina for the Furman Intercollegiate held at the Furman Golf Course.
Women’s softball
The University of Akron women’s softball team has four more games this weekend as they travel to Washington, D.C. to take part in the George Washington Invitational. Akron (9-10) has won seven of their last eight games after some early struggles.
The Zips will play on Saturday, taking on Canisius at 10 a.m., followed by a game against host George Washington at 12:30 p.m.
Then on Sunday, Akron faces Gardner-Webb at 10 a.m. in a rematch. Earlier this season on Feb. 27, Akron won by 5-1. Canisius and Akron will play each other once again at 12:30 p.m. to finish the weekend off.
Offensively, Alyssa Nicholas leads Akron with a .314 batting average and is tied at eight RBI’s with Taylor Kirian and Kelly Hysong for the team lead. Savannah Fruin is providing the power with a team-high three home runs and six extra base hits so far this season.
On the mound, Erin Seiler has a win-loss record of 8-6 with 10 complete games. She has struck out 79 batters in her 73 innings pitched and has an ERA of 1.25.
