Get ready to deck out in glow sticks and black light material for The University of Akron’s third annual 5k Glow Run on Friday, April 29 at the Lee R. Jackson Track & Field Complex.

The run begins at 9 p.m. but registration and check-in start at 7:30 p.m. during the day of the 5k.

During the run, participants can enjoy live music from a DJ, and photographers will also be there to capture those on the course. In addition, participants will receive a performance T-shirt, show lights, other novelty items. They can also take advantage of the glowing photo booth.

President of Exercise Science Club Rachel Salberg said, “The UA Glow Run 5k is a great opportunity for beginners and experienced runners to participate in a fun, nighttime 5k around campus.”

The cost to participate is $20 for pre-registration and $25 on the day of the event.

The proceeds from the glow run will support the Exercise Science Club members that are traveling in May to the American College of Sports Medicine annual meeting in Boston.

“This professional conference is a wonderful opportunity for our students to attend lectures and seminars from world-renowned healthcare providers and researchers,” Salberg said. “This year, three University of Akron students have qualified to represent the Midwest Region in the ACSM Student Quiz Bowl.”

According to Salberg, the glow run gives students the opportunity to help organize a large-scale fitness event. Student members who organized this event had to handle registration, marketing, course layout, decorations and finding sponsors.

Salberg said the run is expecting to attract more than 200 participants.

This is the third year that the Exercise Science Club has held this event, and the idea came about because members wanted a good way to raise money.

Salberg said each year they are trying to make improvements.

“It’s always fun to see the new ideas that organization members come up with each year,” Salberg said.
