With the time to give coming just around the corner, it felt needed to discuss a group of Greek Life women from different chapters on campus devoting their time to a philanthropy called Circle of Sisterhood.

The week of Nov. 7 through the 12th is Circle of Sisterhood Week. Starting on Monday, there will be a $2 Pure Barre class in the Student Union Ballrooms from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Tuesday, there will be a UA Speaks event in the Piano Lounge from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Then on Saturday, Nov. 12, there will be a Flag Football Tournament from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. where teams from different chapters play one another.

The Circle of Sisterhood is a non-profit organization that was founded to empower women to get an education through financial fundraising and support. The organization hopes to give opportunities to women living in poverty all over the globe.

Two years ago, different sororities on campus joined together to start raising awareness for this philanthropy.

Eight different women from five different chapters on campus are currently devoting their time to this organization.

“As an education major, I am so blessed to be a part of the committee for this philanthropy in Akron,” said UA junior Carley Segers. “When I am a teacher, I plan on informing my students about education in different parts of the world and how women in some countries are not fortunate enough to receive an education.”

Segers is the coordinator for Shanel O’Connor, the Panhellenic Council’s vice president of community relations. Segers assists Shanel in running the committee meetings and helps the members with anything they need.

“I am actually coming to the end of my term as the overseer of the Circle of Sisterhood Committee here on Akron’s campus,” O’Connor said. “Because of this position, I have become much more passionate and aware of the situation of women in poverty and the lack of education available to them.”

O’Connor continued by saying how much she loved being a part of this community. “The women who are on my committee are kind and dedicated and I am so lucky to have them,” she said. “Because of holding this position, I have come to hold a special place in my heart for the Circle of Sisterhood. I am very passionate about what this organization does for the women around the world.”

“I have enjoyed being a part of this philanthropy this past year,” said junior Courtney Dockry. “Education provides so many opportunities and experiences and provides a pathway to success. I am passionate about this organization because not everyone gets to experience the educational opportunities that I have had and I want to change that.”
