NeW celebrates anniversary

Written by: Katelyn Freil

September 29 marked the eighth anniversary of the nation’s Network of enlightened Women (NeW), an organization for conservative university women.

“NeW stands for the empowerment of women through education on social issues, politics, and women’s issues, and NeW is the nation’s premier organization for culturally conservative women,” said Rachel Smith, the president of the Akron chapter of NeW, in an email conversation.

According to Smith, the members discuss topics like women in media, the war on women and the “hook-up” culture on campus, which is a phrase associated with the lack of dating or courtship in a relationship before becoming intimate. Smith said that there are usually eight women in attendance, which is good for more personal discussion.

Smith said that women should get involved because the group offers a different viewpoint to campus liberalism and the discussions are meant to foster respect for women of all different kinds.

“We recognize that women are made inherently different than men, but equal to them, and we strive to empower women to be all that they can be,” she said.

Personally, Smith has found a new understanding through the group.

“I personally have found a great deal of empowerment through NeW, as well as a better understanding of our world and the way women relate to it,” she said. “I have also found an incredible group of women, who are my closest friends.”

Smith said for the eighth anniversary of NeW, the Akron chapter held what she called a birthday party.

“It was a really fun and laid back social event where we could discuss issues that matter to us and connect with each other on a more personal level,” Smith said.

NeW hosts many social events, guest speakers and debates. One event hosted by the Akron chapter, as well as others, is the Gentlemen’s Auction. According to Smith, this event showcases men around campus who respect women and exhibit gentlemanly behavior.

“[The men] are nominated by women on campus, and ‘compete’ by answering questions about what being a true gentleman means. The winner receives a gift card to a local restaurant,” Smith said.

NeW is planning on a hay ride this month as a next outing for the group.

New’s next meeting will be today at 5:30 p.m. in Student Union room 323. For more information about NeW, visit enlightenedwomen.org.
