Men's soccer defeats Northern Illinoise

Written by: Zack West

The No. 3 University of Akron men’s soccer team improved to 9-1-2, and 4-0-0 in the MAC, when they traveled to Northern Illinois on Saturday.

The Zips out-shot the Huskies (3-7-2, 2-1-0 MAC) 18-8 for the game and continued their streak of 42 Conference games without a loss. They are second on the active list and only five marks short of the all-time record.

The Zips went up quick in a physical match with NIU. Phil Fives scored in the second minute off a corner kick from Aodhan Quinn.

Reinaldo Brenes gave the Zips an insurance goal when he scored his seventh goal of the season in the 85th minute.

NIU was able to take some shots on goal, but senior goalkeeper David Meves was up to the challenge, recording five saves on the night and putting up his 47th career shutout.

The Zips will return to FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field for their next two matches. They take on Michigan tonight at 7:30 p.m. and West Virginia on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
