Akron improves to 15-1-2

Written by: Zack West

In another dominant game by the No. 2 University of Akron men’s soccer team, the Zips capped off their season with a 1-0 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos.

The scoreboard didn’t reflect the Zips’ dominance, thanks to an organized defense by the Broncos (11-6-2, 3-3-1 MAC). However, the Zips held a 23-2 shot advantage for the game, with a 9-0 shot on goal advantage and a 10-2 edge on corner kicks.

The deciding goal came in the 86th minute, when senior Scott Caldwell knocked in a rebound shot.

With this win, the Zips swept the Mid-American Conference for the fifth season in a row and earned the No. 1 seed in the MAC tournament.

“We’re battle-tested,” said head coach Caleb Porter after the game. “We’re ready for the postseason, and now we start season two: the MAC tournament.”

The Zips will be hosting the MAC tournament that starts Friday. The Zips will take on Bowling Green at 7:30 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field, following the match between Northern Illinois and West Virginia at 4 p.m. The MAC Championship game will be played Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
