The University of Akron College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering will be receiving a new associate professor on April 6.
Dr. Matthew Becker will be coming to UA from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, he will teach polymer chemistry in the fall of 2009.
Dr. Ali Dhinojwala, a professor of polymer science, said that Becker could also teach a class that would be offered to seniors in chemical engineering and chemistry.
Becker, a former staff scientist and project leader, is expected to add to the growing biomaterials and biopolymers programs at the university.
Dr. Becker’s expertise in tissue engineering and organic chemistry will significantly complement the biopolymer research currently underway, says Dr. Stephen Cheng, dean of the UA College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, and furthermore, will enhance the biomolecular materials research at UA and at the BioInnovation Institute in Akron.
Becker most recently was an area leader and co-investor for Integrated Technologies for Polymeric Biomaterials: RESBIO in which he received $5.5 million from the National Institutes of Health.
Matthew is a fantastic scientist and will lead our effort in the area of Biomaterials, Dhinojwala said.
We are very fortunate to have him join Akron.
Becker has published more than 40 refereed papers and was a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at NIST.
