Fun, fun, fun… till the heart gets in the way

Friends with benefits, sleeping around, sex with no commitment or emotions attached. Call it what you will, but there is no secret that Friends with Benefits has become a notorious trend around college campuses.

Picture this. A couple has just broken up after a few years of dating. The guy no longer wants to be committed; however, he still wants the sexual benefits. He confronts the girl and what does she do? Many women nowadays will say yes without even the slightest hesitation.

For women, friends with benefits is false hope. They continue to hook up with the guy because they believe that this will somehow mature into a future relationship. Women often think, As long as he wants my body, he still wants me. However, this could not be more inaccurate.

For the majority of men, or boys, I should say, friends with benefits is just a cowardly excuse to sleep around with no consequences. They feel as though they can sleep with the woman and then not have to speak to her again until they’re horny or aroused. A text every once in a while saying come over or something a bit more vulgar does not suffice for the woman. The man just wants instant gratification. For him, knowing he has a woman at his beck and call is a rush.

This type of affair is unhealthy for both parties. For men, it increases the ego to levels that should just never be attained. And for women, it is self-destructive and emotionally harmful.

Though the scenario I just explained is the typical stereotype of what occurs, there are instances where the roles are entirely reversed. In these cases, the woman takes pride in having a man at her beck and call.

In either case, someone gets hurt and the situation usually ends badly. Bottom line: ladies, have some dignity and guys, hope you’re safe.
