From across the conference

Matthew Balsinger

There have been many things going on in University of Akron sports as well as the Mid-American Conference that have not been reported on. This is a short synopsis of what’s going on around the conference.

Ohio University

The Bobcats have continued to keep pace with Akron in men’s basketball by defeating both Central Michigan and Kent State this past week. The only game that Ohio has lost in the conference to is Akron.

Kent State

University of Akron Athletics Department announced last week that the final men’s basketball game against Kent State will take place on March 8. The Golden Flashes have fallen on tough times; they have lost seven games in the conference, which is a long way away from their conference championship run three short years ago.

Zips Women’s Basketball

After a tough three-game losing streak, the Lady Zips have put together an impressive five-game winning streak.

MAC player of the week

University of Akron basketball player Rachel Tecca has been declared the women’s basketball player of the week. Tecca led the Zips to victory over MAC opponent Ball State on Saturday with 22 points.

Zips Rifle

The Zips rifle team visited Ohio State this past weekend for a regional NCAA tournament qualifying match; Akron placed third overall in the qualifying match; however, they did not receive an invitation to the rifle national championship.

Zips Softball

The Lady Zips softball team began their season this past weekend with a 1-1 game split. Akron defeated East Tennessee State 3-2 and lost to the College of Charleston 5-0.

Zips Baseball

The Akron Zips baseball team started off their 2013 season last week with two losses to Georgia Tech. For a more in-depth analysis of these games, look back at the sports section of the Buchtelite on Thursday.
