The University of Akron will host its fourth annual Student Appreciation Day at various locations across campus Wednesday afternoon.
The event, coordinated by the Department of New Student Orientation, will be held from 2 – 6 p.m. It will consist of booths that will be giving away free hot dogs, beverages and raffle prizes. Also being offered for free on a first come first serve basis are ROO ZOO T-shirts, with UA ZipCard.
Basically it’s a way for faculty and staff to welcome students and to create relationships with them, said Dr. Charles Fey, vice president of student affairs.
Fey also said, We want students to get comfortable with the campus.
The event is made possible by donations from many different offices around campus. In 2007, the day brought together more than 10,000 students and 850 UA employees.
Dr. Victor Pinheiro, associate professor of physical and health education, believes events like these help unite the UA community.
In 2007 he said, Such events foster university culture, tradition and spirit.
They contribute to student success, retention and graduation. Pinheiro who helped institutionalize the event in 2006 said they were initially just trying to provide an avenue for students and staff to interact with each other outside of the classroom.
Update: The booths at Student Appreciation Day will not be giving out hot dogs and beverages tomorrow but will instead be handing out $2 Food Vouchers to be used at various locations on campus.
