The advisory comes after several downtown businesses and an Olin Hall office were broken into.

University Police are advising employees to lock unoccupied office doors, even if you are planning to be away for only seconds, the report said in a copy of edigest.

UAPD Major Newt Engle said that the downtown robberies were being investigated by the city of Akron, and UAPD is looking into the Olin Hall incident.

Were not sure the one in Olin Hall is related, Engle said.

According to the police report, two credit cards were stolen along with a social security card.

Common Security

While students may not have offices to lock up they certainly have not been exempt from things going missing.

Engle said that in there have been a lot people reporting their stuff coming up missing.

Students drop their stuff off and go to get something to eat and come back and find their backpack gone, Engle said.

Engle reinforced the common safety tips for anyone on campus.

Don’t leave your stuff unattended or unsecured, Engle said. The rec center is doing a really good job with lock it or loose it and we wish we could get that same philosophy across campus.

He suggested asking the person next to you to watch your stuff while you run to the restroom or to get something to eat.

The person beside you will probably watch your stuff while you in run in and take care of business, Engle said.

Walking across campus

Another issue Engle talked about was safety when crossing the street.

Don’t cross the street like your playing the game Frogger, he said. I know if you’re in the Exchange Street dorm you don’t want to walk all the way down to McDonalds to cross the street, but you need to.

We had someone that was hit by a car in front of the Exchange Street dorm trying to dart across the road, he said.

His key message was simply for students, faculty and staff to pay attention to their surroundings and obey the traffic laws.

Watch the signs and watch the drivers that are not paying attention, he said. Sometimes they come flying down and do not see the cross walks.

Engle did say that students being hit by a vehicle is not a common occurrence; it is something that seems to be more common this year.

Engle did say that there had been talks around UAPD about officers standing at cross walks to monitor that people are being safe and help detour students from jay walking.

He said he didn’t know the last time UAPD passed out a jay walking ticket. According to Engle, this is something they try to steer clear of.

You pay enough to go to school here the last thing we need to do is give you a ticket, he said.
