A bond of $1 million was set for the man charged in connection with the Wednesday shooting of an Iraq War veteran near campus.
Efrem Recardo Johnson, 50, is being held in the Summit County Jail after he made a video appearance in Akron Municipal Court Monday morning.
The victim, 24-year-old Jacob C. Courie, was home on a two-week leave when he was shot outside of the plasma center on Brown and East Exchange streets.
Courie and his cousin had left Buffalo Wild Wings Grill and Bar Wednesday evening when Courie and the suspect got into a verbal altercation. Courie was shot in the stomach with a sawed-off shotgun shortly after a second exchange of words, according to police.
After several hours of surgery at Akron General Medical Center, Courie died around 5 a.m. Thursday.
Johnson was arrested Friday night while working at his janitorial job in the 500 block of South Main Street.
Johnson will make his next court appearance April 7.
