Our View: Surprise, surprise, the world is not ending

Here we are with only a few weeks left in the semester and thinking about what lies ahead.  For some, this is summer school; others are thinking of what to do in the period of time called post-grad, and yet another group is thinking only of relaxing in the summer sun.  Each of these things is of equal importance, though it may not seem to be that way.  For each of us, approaching the end to yet another school year feels like some kind of an ending.  However, does this conclusion really mean anything at all?

Personally, I have seen students lose momentum at this point of the semester, and it is only detrimental.  Nothing is gained from slowing down drastically as your classes wind down.  True, this semester is coming to a close, but does that mean that everything else is also about to stop?  Hopefully not, unless the Mayans were right, but even then, we have till next winter.

The world does not stop with the end of each semester.  As such, we can’t stop either.  Often, I have said that motivation is one of the keys to success.  This sounds corny; however, it is at least partially true.  Pushing yourself to constantly want more and more is not a negative thing at all.  One could insert an even more corny sentiment here, perhaps that cliché about shooting for the moon and landing in the stars, but it is unnecessary.  The major point is that the work never ends.

This slightly disheartening fact can be applied to our lives right now as we stand on the edge of that cliff called finals week.  Now is the time when we think about what is yet to come without halting.  The sun may be shining, but these are the times that we need to work the hardest.  Finals are approaching and must be passed just like all the papers we have left until the very last possible minute of the semester. They must be written.  All of these things have to happen before we can move on to the much desired summer.  Don’t lose your momentum now.  Instead, keep fighting to get through and finish strongly.

Pushing is never a bad thing, unless it involves pushing someone else off of something- that’s not so good.  Besides illegal activity, pushing now is not only what we need to do, but is also a good way to set ourselves up with a positive mindset for the rest of the summer.  Whether you are working this summer, taking more classes, moving away from the college scene and into the adult workforce or just relaxing for a change, being a sloth is never a good thing.  Decide what you want to be doing and start working your hardest to get down that path.
