Barker and Kelly were each indicted on murder charges. These charges carry a 15-year to life sentence if found guilty.
Both remain charged with fellonious assault. Barker is also charged with an unclassified felony and obstructing official business.
The group of UA and KSU students met sometime after 2 a.m. on Nov. 14 after the car in which Barker and Kelly were passengers almost hit Kernich and his friends, who were on foot.
Barker and Kelly pulled into a driveway nearby and allegedly attacked Kernich and his friends.
Kernich died at Akron City Hospital on Nov. 22 of a blunt force injury to the head.
According to UA spokeswoman Laura Massie, both men were enrolled for classes this semester.
