Local theater group brings Shakespeare to UA campus
October 22, 2013
Rubber City Shakespeare Company is bringing classical theater alive around the UA campus this fall, led by UA alumnus and Producing Artistic Director Dane Leasure.
Shakespeare’s classic shipwrecked comedy, “Twelfth Night,” took the stage in Leigh Hall from Oct. 17 to Oct. 20, being the second production Leasure has brought to Akron’s campus.
Leasure said that the College of Education has helped to sponsor some of the events. The company is working on filing to be a non-profit organization.
Leasure graduated from UA with a B.A. in Humanities and went on to continue his education at Mary Baldwin College. He has six months left until graduation. Leasure will then hold two master’s degrees, one in Letters in Shakespeare Performance and one in Fine Arts.
“We just officially announced next year we’re doing five to six stage productions, along with working on leasing a space probably close to, but not on, campus. Also, keeping a partnership with campus would be great,” Leasure said.
The bloody drama “Julius Caesar” is set to take the stage March 15, 2014. This is a one-night event that is free and donations are accepted.
Normally, ticket prices for productions are free for students with a valid Zip Card, $10 for adults and $8 for senior citizens and students from other schools.
“In every way, I feel the company will be a success,” Miranda Roth, a UA alumnus, said. Roth graduated with a B.A. in Theatre Arts in 2011 and has been working with Leasure since he began his company in March.
“The best part of this company is being in a supportive team. It makes going to rehearsal fun and you become connected with other cast members almost immediately after rehearsal,” said Roth.
The company offers opportunities for anyone to be cast for a role in a production. Volunteers for the productions are always welcome, too. In past productions, a majority of cast members have consisted of students and alumni from The University of Akron.
