The University of Akron women’s basketball team announced on Tuesday that forward Sina King will not participate in the 2013-2014 season due to injury.

“The health of our student athletes is always our top priority,” Jodi Kest, the team’s head coach, said to media. “Sina has been instrumental to our recent success, and although her presence on the court will be missed, she will remain an integral part of our program.”

King is battling blood clots. It will sideline her for six months and then she will undergo evaluation.

Though King’s last season averaged 15 points per game and 8.7 rebounds, her contributions a year before was how she gained most of her
popularity.

King became the women’s basketball team star after junior Rachel Tecca went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). King assumed her position near the basket and was able to fill Tecca’s role for most of the season.

King finished the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championship game with 13 points, though the Zips eventually lost.

The Zips will open their season against Flordia Atlantic on Nov. 8. It will be apart of a Zips double-header as the men’s team will play after.
