The women’s basketball team started the regular season on Friday and played IUPUI and traveled to New York on Sunday to take on St. Bonaventure.

Before the game against the IUPUI Jaguars, Zips Kara Murphy was honored by getting a ball to commemorate her stellar career and join the 1,000 point scorers before her. Murphy is the youngest player to do so and had 580 points last season.

The Zips won their season opener on Friday against the IUPUI Jaguars 63-49.

I’m glad to get a win, but it wasn’t pretty at times, Zips head coach Jodi Kest said, It’s very good to get a win in a season opener. I’ll take today because we had four players in double figures and we didn’t need for Kara (Murphy) to do all of the scoring, which is important.

The Zips committed 18 turnovers against the Jaguars.

I felt we committed too many turnovers, Kest said.

The Zips went into half time with a comfortable lead (36-22) and kept the lead the whole game, but it did get close as the Jaguars got within 10 points at one point in the second half.

Key Stats for the Zips was Kara Murphy 14 points, Jolene Tamboue seven rebounds and Ayla Guzzardo three steals.

Coming off the bench to give the Zips a boost was freshman Rachel Tecca as she recorded seven rebounds, one assist and seven points.

Rachel (Tecca) gave us a lot of energy today, Kest said.

Other key stats for the Zips were three assists by Amber Witt, Kyle Baumgartner 11 points and Natasha Williams one rebound.

The Zips were 23-54 from the field, 5-9 from behind the arc (three pointers), 36 rebounds, 14 blocks and seven steals.

Jessica Huffman had 14 points, Kerah Nelson had six rebounds and Farren Stackhouse had two blocked shots to lead the Jaguars.

The Jaguars were 20-54 from the field, 3-13 from behind the arc, 38 rebounds, 11 assists and seven steals.

The Zips traveled to New York on Sunday to take on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies and lost 67-37.

Key stats for the Zips were Kara Murphy six points, Kyle Baumgartner four rebounds and Alya Guzzardo three assists.

Tecca came off the bench and had six points, one block and two rebounds.

Team stats for the Zips were 11-36 from the field, 4-6 from behind the arc (three pointers), 23 rebounds, 11 assists and six steals.
