Swimming defeats Ball State 186-109

“The Akron Zips swimming and diving team hosted the Ball State Cardinals on Friday. The Zips defeated the Cardinals 186-109, and with this win the Zips improve to 1-2 (1-2 MAC), while Ball State falls to 1-2 (1-2 MAC). Senior Julia Gregos won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:23.”

The Akron Zips swimming and diving team hosted the Ball State Cardinals on Friday.

The Zips defeated the Cardinals 186-109, and with this win the Zips improve to 1-2 (1-2 MAC), while Ball State falls to 1-2 (1-2 MAC).

Senior Julia Gregos won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:23.25.

Senior Kylie Bombrys won third place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:40.45.

In the 200-yard freestyle, the Zips took the top three spots. Freshman Rebecca Zimmer finished in first with a time of 1:55.08, senior Melissa Gary finished second with a time of 1:57.52 and sophomore Meg Finnerty finished in third with a time of 1:58.03.

The Zips also finished 1-2-3 in the 50 yard freestyle. Freshman Katie Miles placed first with a time of 23.98, while Julia Gregos came in second with a time of 24.59, and Jessica Ickes placing third with a time of 24.84.

The Zips also swept the top three spots in the 100 yard freestyle. Zielinski won the event with a time of 52.18. Miles placed second with a time of 52.91 and Finnerty placed third with a time of 53.96.

Coming off of a double loss last weekend on the road, we are very happy to get our first win of the season at our home opener, coach Newt Engle said. We haven’t beaten Ball State in the past three years, so it was encouraging for us to win so decisively.

Akron finished the 400 medley relay which opened the event with the A squad (Karchner, Szymkowiak, Colins, and Zielinski) coming in first place with a time of 3:53.83. The Akron B Squad (Cross, Reynolds, Ickes, and Finnerty) finishing in second with a time of 3:57.91.
