According to a special edition Zipmail, there has recently been a rise in armed robberies around the south side of campus. The University of Akron is taking action by assigning additional UA police officers, City of Akron police officers and Summit County Sherriff’s deputiesto the area. On Sunday morning, a plainclothes officer arrested a man that allegedly confronted a group of students and claimed to have a gun.
UAPD Chief Paul Callahan thinks that when there are more people out, there are more victims. I believe that criminals know when we come back to school. They know when all the kids are back here, so they know that’s their opportunity to commit the acts that they apparently enjoy doing, Callahan said.
To protect yourself, he suggests the following. Look out for yourself, be cautious of what your surroundings are and don’t put yourself in harm’s way, Callahan said.
Additionally, Callahan suggested that students do not walk around at night. Taking the Roo Express or a car is an easy way to avoid crime. If walking is unavoidable, Callahan suggests staying in well-lit areas and walking with a group.
