The Corrosion Technology program received a part of the $200,000 2014 Dominion Foundation Higher Education Grant.

A $25,000 portion of the grant was presented to Lori Kraft, associate professor of general technology in the Department of Engineering and Science Technology.

Kraft has already used a portion of the funds on a series of cathodic protection systems that future students will be testing and operating themselves. There will also be a new Corrosion Technology course this upcoming spring semester. The department will continue to allocate the funds throughout the year.

Dominion is recognizing those who have a background in corrosion technology. “Many companies are excited about the University of Akron’s new Corrosion Engineering BS Degree,” said Kraft. “They recognize the university’s unique contribution in combating a significant, growing problem.”

Dominion and Babcock and Wilcox Industry have been working with Kraft in deciding the needs of the new corrosion laboratory. Industrial representatives made the Corrosion Focus Group 2013 in which they stated their views on corrosion in a guide. Kraft is using the guide to determine what equipment is most appropriate.

According to Kraft, students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of corrosion prevention, control, and treatment. She hopes the students will embrace the chance to earn a Corrosion Technology Certificate at the university and work in a growing field in which there are many opportunities.
