Tryouts for Zippy’s heir

UA is holding tryouts for a new student to take the forthcoming vacant Zippy mascot position.

On Thursday, Feb. 19 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the James A. Rhodes Arena Lab 4, students who registered to audition will begin the first of two rounds of tryouts.

“Every judge will have a score sheet and will score different areas of the in-suit process,” said Mary Lafferty, administrative assistant of communications in UA’s Athletic Department. “Based on an individual’s scores they are asked to return to the next round which entails a brief interview process and a better explanation of the program and responsibilities.”

Audition registries are full-time students of all grades. UA’s Athletic Department is looking for students who are “fun, full of school spirit, and love kids of all ages,” according to Lafferty.

The new Zippy will be chosen on availability and must be a good representative for UA. After a student is selected, he or she will begin training throughout the summer and make the first appearance at the start of the 2015 Zips football season.

The new Zippy will be expected to pump up crowds’ spirit at events and show great UA pride throughout their time as mascot.
