On Tuesday, the University of Akron’s new women’s rights group, L.I.P. Service, held its first major event, an educational game show, on the third floor of the Student Union.
L.I.P, which stands for Liberation in Progress, Service was born out of the university’s women’s studies department at the beginning of the year.
We were kind of surprised that there was no feminist organization on campus, said L.I.P. Service president Stephanie Cunningham.
The fledgling organization is actively recruiting members and wants to spread the word about itself and the problem of violence against women.
The organization is also open to men, though none have attended any of the functions thus far. Currently only female students and several staff members comprise the group.
The chief issues pertaining to violence against women that L.I.P Service stress are domestic abuse and sexual assault, both of which remain present on campus and in the surrounding area.
On Tuesday, room 316 of the Student Union housed a Who Wants to be a Millionaire-style game show that sought to educate students about violence towards women.
Besides spousal and sexual abuse, L.I.P. Service included international women’s issues such as human trafficking, female genital mutilation and the personal cost of war on women across the world.
All in all, the game was a great success, but Cunningham has her eyes set on bigger plans for L.I.P Service.
On Oct. 10, L.I.P. Service plans to help the rape crisis centers of Summit and Medina counties with their Take Back the Night rallies. Also, the organization will join with the department of women’s studies to repeat last year’s highly-successful showing of the Vagina Monologues in Feb.
Though the organization is still in its infancy, plans are being made for more events this semester.
