One month ago I was worried about taking on the news editor position and all of my classes. I really did not pay attention to what the future leaders were saying.

I felt there was nothing tying me to this election. Everyone says the youth vote is the biggest vote, but I felt no real connection to the election or its issues in the least.

It was not until last week that I became interested.  It was during a conference call with Michelle Obama that I realized just how much this election pertains to me.

During the call she talked about financial aid and said that she and Senator Obama just paid back their college loans. To me, this said something. 

The average college graduate is weighted down in $22,000 in student loans, she said. Barack and I both experienced that as well because we just paid down our student loans. We were in debt to that sum even greater.

Obama said that her husband has a plan to increase the Pell Grant from $4,050 to $5,100.

McCain’s Web site talks about making tax benefits for higher education less complicated and simplifying financial aid.

Another issue is that of the economy.

Our country is facing high unemployment rates, Michelle Obama said. The bad news on  economy just keeps coming. It’s getting hard for recent graduates to find a job that pays good enough to cover the debt that they are coming out with.

Other issues such as the environment are playing a key role in this election.

With global warming and American energy consumption becoming a normal conversation, each candidate has developed their own way of easing the situation.

There are also issues that may not affect us today but will be something in our future such as restoring the middle class and health care. 

No matter how irrelevant we may feel some issues are, they can be critical to our future.

A trip to either candidate’s Web site will give you everything you need to know to make an informed decision on what each candidate stands for and their plans for this country.

One thing I have heard over and over again during this election is that this election will determine the course for an entire generation.

So as those who will be effected the most by this, let’s take the wheel and direct our own course.
