Individuals who make the long trek downtown in order to hit up a bar run will most likely find that getting to the bar is much easier than returning home.
Hailing a cab is one option for intoxicated students wanting to catch a ride, rather than climb Mount Everest just to get back to campus, but we have a better idea.
The Roo Express should extend its hours in order to pick up students who want to get back from downtown.
Before you write this off as an excuse to have a party bus for lazy college students, consider the following points.
Walking to campus from downtown late at night isn’t the safest way to live your life. If the Roo Express extended its hours later than 11 p.m. on Friday and 12 a.m. on Saturday, students would have a much safer alternative to walking on the dark streets of Akron.
Not only would this decrease the crime that happens at early morning hours, but it would also decrease the amount of drunk driving that occurs, endangering the lives of many. Everyone knows someone or has a friend that is irresponsible enough to get behind the wheel when they’re drunk because they don’t want to walk. If Roo Express runs until 3 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, people will be less inclined to get behind the wheel.
Should college students be more responsible when they’re drinking? Of course, but the chances of that happening are slim.
If the Roo Express has longer hours, it’s not going to end the drunken debauchery that happens on campus, but it could provide a safer transportation alternative to students who decide to head downtown.
