Food trucks have returned to The University of Akron and they will be here until May 1.

“A rotation of local food trucks is filling the gap and adding interesting flare during lunch, for special events and even an occasional breakfast run,” said Chester Howard, the general manager of UA’s Dining Services.

The food trucks that will be returning to campus are Stone Pelican Rolling Café, Sassy Dog, The Spread, The Orange Trük, Premier Crepes, Wholly Frijoles, JT’s Barbecue and Swenson’s.

The student favorite Swenson’s will return only on May 1 during Springfest.

Premier Crepes, a hand-held crepe vendor, and Sassy Dog, a hotdog vendor, will be on campus Tuesdays in April.

On Wednesdays in April, JT’s Barbecue will be on campus serving various types of barbeque.

Wholly Frijoles, a unique twist of Mexican street food will be on campus during Thursdays in April.

The Orange Trük is an out-of-the-ordinary culinary vendor and will be on campus Fridays in April and May 1.

The Spread, featuring sandwiches on fresh-baked bagels will be on campus Mondays and on Saturday, April 18.

A food truck with vegan and gluten-free options, The Stone Pelican will be on campus Monday, April 20.

The food trucks will be located on the Buchtel Mall between the West Hall and the Goodyear Polymer Center. They are primarily open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Price is very important so we try to balance the food truck rotation with something for everyone. Swenson’s, Sassy Dog, and JT’s Bar B Que are $5 and Orange Truck and Wholly Frijoles and are closer to $10,” Howard said.

Food trucks were first allowed on campus since the fall semester of 2013. To be allowed on campus, the food trucks must meet UA’s standards.

Looking toward the future of food trucks on campus, Howard said, “Students would like for the food trucks to take Meal Plan Swipes. But these trucks are private businesses so it is not possible right now. We would like to have our own food truck at The University of Akron to enable us to take all forms of campus payments.”
