Hannah Plybon netted 23 on Saturday, but the Zips fell short

Despite the performances of Hannah Plybon and Anita Brown, The University of Akron women’s basketball team fell to the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Eagles, 82-64 on Saturday. at the James A. Rhodes Arena. The game was part of the second day of the Akron Classic at the James A. Rhodes Arena.

Plybon hit five shots from long distance and scored a game-high 23 points, while Brown chipped in 21 more points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. DiAndra Gibson also added eight points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Akron (1-2) started the game off well running out to 10-4 lead as Plybon connected on two bombs in the first four minutes of the game. FGCU responded with a 10-0 run of their own to grab a 14-10 advantage with two minutes still remaining in the first period.

Megan Barilla, Brown, and Gibson each connected on shots as Akron closed the period on a 7-0 run and a three point lead for the Zips.

The Eagles (2-2) out-scored Akron 26-15 in the second period to take an eight point lead at the half at 40-32.

FGCU had their largest lead of the game at 22 points with just 20 seconds left in the third quarter end at 68-46.

The Zips hit only 38.7 percent of their shots for the game, lost the rebounding war, 39-37, and turned the ball over 13 times compared to the Eagles seven.

Akron is off until next weekend when they travel to San Diego for the USD-Courtyard San Diego Central Classic where they will face Northern Colorado on Friday and host San Diego on Saturday.
