Rifle team claims top spot at the Zippy Open

The University of Akron’s No. 15 rifle team hosted the annual Zippy Open over the course of a couple of weekends in November. The open had more than 130 participants and, at the end, the Zips were crowned the overall champions with their combined score of 4,618.
In the air rifle competition, the Zips scored a total of 2,327 points. Zachary Strohl was the champion of the NCAA competitors with an individual score of 590. Connor O’Mara was a close second to Strohl and shot a 580, followed by Tim Hopkins who sniped a 579.
Akron also came out on top of the smallbore competition standings with a combined score of 2,291. Julia Hatch and Hopkins tied for the top NCAA marksmen in the event, each recording a 576. Caleb Lloyd rounded out the top three for the Zips, posting a score of 570.
