Speed dating – after hearing the word, one almost instantly thinks of the awkward scene from The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Most college students have never been to such an event, thus all they know about speed dating is from what is seen in TV or movies.
On Tuesday night, the Commuter Student Organization put on two University of Akron speed-dating events in Ballroom A of the Student Union. Heading the event was fourth year Akron student Kellie Geiger.
According to Geiger, this was not the first time a speed-dating event has taken place at UA.
There have been several other organizations that have had speed dating events, Geiger said. Normally a speed dating event will have around 40 to 50 people participating. The age group ranges from freshman to grad students, generally from 18 to 24, but we do have the occasional outlier.
The event was made up of free snacks, music, speed dating tables and about 30 people – mostly men. Andy Sholtis, a junior in International Business, and Korey Killburn ,a 3rd year Grad student in Mechanical Engineering, were two of the men who attended. Sholtis said that he came out for moral support for his friends who were organizers of the event.
Plus they have free food, Sholtis said.
I saw a flyer and decided to come out, Killburn said. I wanted to find a way to get involved with the campus life and figured this would be a great way to do just that. I was kind of curious what speed dating was like so I figured I would go and see what happens.
The speed dating consisted of the ladies sitting at different tables while the guys moved from table to table in 5-minute intervals. The first lady of the evening was Freshman Daniel Racicki, who came with her roommate.
The event is pretty much what I expected it to be, other than the more guy to girl ratio, she said.
Freshman Carli Peck agreed.
I came because I figured it would be a fun thing to go and do, she said. There isn’t much else to do on a Tuesday night.
Both girls said all the guys were nice, and were glad they came. Overall, a good time seemed to be had by all – even the guys who were just eating the free food and having fun without participating in the actual dating aspect.
