The University of Akron Police Department teamed up with the athletic department to help the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend home football and basketball games until Dec. 21 to have the opportunity to “Cram the cROOzer.”

A University Police cruiser will be parked outside the various sporting venues to collect non-perishable food items, toiletries, and other household products.

“This year, in order to enhance our community support efforts, we teamed up with the Athletics Department and formed the ‘Cram the cROOzer’ event,”  UAPD Major Dale Gooding said. “We think it is a fantastic way for students, faculty, staff — and our entire community — to help those who may be having a difficult time, especially this time of year.”

To participate, look for the “cROOzer” parked outside the James A. Rhodes Arena one hour before basketball games.

One can donate to “Cram the cROOzer” by attending either the men’s basketball game on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m., or the women’s basketball game on Monday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m.

“We feel that all of these programs are crucial in developing relationships with our community,” Gooding Jr. said.

If one wishes to donate but cannot attend a game, stop by the UAPD station, located at 146 Hill St., and drop off non-perishable food items any time before Dec. 22.

UAPD is also involved in other community support efforts including The Teddy Bear toss, which advocates for the Victims Assistance Program of Summit County, and Trunk-or-Treat and the Easter egg hunt, which allow UAPD to interact with children and their families in the community.
